St. George Parish History

The first Greek immigrants arrived in this area at the turn of the 20th century. During the 1920s and 30s the Orthodox community in Lynchburg would gather at the old First National Bank Building at 10th and Main, only receiving Holy Communion 2-3 times a year.

As the parish expanded, the small building became inadequate and in 1950 the church purchases the Christian Science Church on Victoria Ave, establishing the first Orthodox Church in Lynchburg.

Tragedy struck in May, 1967, following St. George's nameday, an early morning fire gutted the church. Only a few remnants from the altar survived.

On January 27, 1968, the ground-breaking services were held, and on August 1 of that same year the new church was complete.

In 1973 His Eminence, Archbishop Iakovos consecrates the church and a relic of St. George and other Saints are sealed into the Altar Table.

Since its inception our parish has grown significantly. It continues to strive to bear more effective witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as expressed in the apostolic tradition and worship of the Greek Orthodox church. We invite you to also participate in this witness by joining the worship and fellowship of our parish.
